Keep awake, stopping running servers, clipboard, display off and refreshing web addresses are free. Awake with lid closed and Mac settings are free to try for 14 days from first use; after that, buy a license once ($4.99, up to 3 of your Macs). No card, no automatic charges.
1. Move it to Applications
Unzip the download, drag Barnook to your Applications folder and open it from there. Because it came from the internet, macOS asks once whether to open it. Barnook stays out of the Dock and adds a small box icon to the menu bar.
2. Ready right away
Keep awake, running servers, clear clipboard, display off and Mac settings work without any permissions. Click the menu bar icon to open the panel. Mac settings… opens a separate window.
3. Turn on lid-closed awake
The first time you flip the switch, System Settings › General › Login Items opens. Allow Barnook, then open the panel again and it turns on. The same approval also covers refreshing web addresses.
Under Turn off automatically, pick a battery limit (10, 20, 30 or 50%). While plugged in, it turns off only if the Mac gets hot.
4. Enter your license
Copy the key from your receipt email, open Mac settings… from the panel, paste it under License at the top and click Activate. To move to another Mac, click Deactivate on this Mac first.
5. Launch at login (optional)
Turn on Launch at login in the ⋯ menu at the bottom of the panel. You can change the language there too.
Updating and removing
To update, quit Barnook and replace the app in Applications. The helper app for lid mode updates itself too.
To remove Barnook, choose Remove helper (lid, web addresses) in the ⋯ menu, press Revert all if you changed Mac settings, then quit Barnook and move it to the Trash.
Verify the download (optional)
If you want to make sure the file arrived intact, compare the size and check code (SHA-256) under the download button with the result of shasum -a 256 Barnook-1.1.6.zip in Terminal. You don’t have to.
